Hi, I am Daniella Prado-Castro

Counselling Psychologist

PS 0135453

The focus of my work is to provide a space where clients can empower themselves, believe that they can make changes in their lives, achieve their goals and passions and succeed in their life journey. Clients are the experts and heroes in their lives and my role is to provide a space where they can explore. I completed my masters in Counselling psychology at Wits University my practical training commenced at the Wits Emthonjeni Centre and I completed my internship at the University of Johannesburg Centre for Psychological Services and Career Development. After qualifying as a psychologist, I worked at an NGO working with adults and youth on LGBTI. I also worked with adults and young people at the University of KwaZulu Natal.

I completed both my Honours and Masters research on LGBTI identities. I have presented my research at various conferences and published in the South African Journal of Higher Education. I have a keen interest in gender identity and sexual orientation. I have been an activist working in the NGO sector and have experience working in various communities in KZN and Gauteng. I believe my background has equipped me to work particularly well with children and adolescents and dealing with their transitional stages. It has also given me a platform to work and learn from different cultural expressions, languages, and contexts and to work in a manner which respects and encourages the clients own belief systems.

In my therapeutic work with adults, adolescents and children, I tend to work from a psychodynamic (Winnicotian) and integrative perspective. This means that I help clients to better understand their attachment patterns in their past and currently. I also make use of mindfulness techniques to assist clients in achieving a state of calm and focused relaxation by focusing on thoughts and physical awareness without judgment. In my work with children, I make use of non-directive play therapy and I am trained in sandplay therapy. Using these tools helps me identify their sense of self based on spontaneous authentic experience, and a feeling of being alive. Overall when clients are able to understand their current functioning I believe they can develop the insight to find better copying strategies within a safe therapeutic relationship.

I have worked with people with a wide range of issues, including trauma and abuse, relationship difficulties, adjustment to transitions, loss and bereavement, mood and anxiety disorders, addiction, sexual identity matters, self-development and career planning/development/choice. I work in both English and Spanish.
