Hi, I am Aruna Singh

Educational Psychologist

PS 0149063 / PR1015834

In my therapy session, I work in an integrative manner. I incorporate what the client brings to the session such as the clients' belief systems, culture, and personal strengths to collaborate with them sensitively and respectfully.  I integrate a combination of Rogerian unconditional positive regard, Beck’s cognitive behaviour therapy, and solution-focused therapy to support clients to develop a sense of self-worth, self-acceptance, and hope for a positive outcome.

One of my best learning curves has been teaching for 16 years. This spurred me to study further.  I completed my Honours and master’s degree in educational psychology. I have worked with children and students of various ages with neurodevelopment disorders such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), specific learning disorders (SLD), autism spectrum disorders (ASD) as a remedial therapist at a remedial school and as an educational psychologist at a mainstream private school. My area of focus is psychoeducational assessment and therapy. I am also a remedial therapist (assist children who struggle with English) and I’m a certified Independent Phono-Graphix reading therapist.

I find that children with neurodevelopmental disorders are sometimes misunderstood because they perceive the world through a different lens. Children with neurodevelopment disorders may experience anxiety and distress when navigating complex social and emotional cues in the family, social, and school context in order to make sense of the world, fit in, and feel accepted. Developing understanding and creating a safe space for children with neurodevelopmental disorders helps them to navigate their world with more courage and eventually more confidence over time. Understanding and empathy create a space of inclusion and acceptance for children whose emotions and perceptions of the world overwhelm them.

I use bibliotherapy and play therapy with young children and creative arts therapy with teenagers who find it easier to express themselves by creating artwork or artifacts that help them articulate their challenges if talk therapy is unsuitable for them at that space in time. I have worked with children from five years of age, teenagers, and adults who struggle with anxiety, anger issues, ADHD, SLD, ASD, and teenagers with career counselling.

The stronger person is not the one making the most noise but the one who can quietly direct the conversation toward defining and solving problems.
